Part of the GSI Planet Earth Lecture series, this talk will illustrate how the earth sciences and biology come together to help us understand something of how planet Earth 'works', how it has interacted with life in the past and how we can best predict the future. We are facing a unique set of problems now and the fascinating science organised around IYPE will not only offer some solutions but hopefully inspire us to cherish our beautiful planet and learn not to take it for granted.
