This lecture is organized by the Irish Meteorological Society.
Agriculture is the single largest contributor to the overall greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, at 27.7% of the total in 2006. Emissions from agriculture reached a peak in 1998 and the decline since then has been largely due to lower sheep and cattle numbers as well as reduced use of nitrogenous fertilizers. Further reductions may be possible through changes in land management which include reduced tillage of land and the planting of energy crops. The work described here quantifies the impacts of these land use changes.
